How about trying I-A-M ? You know because you were a smart kid and you were trying to quote René Descartes, “ I think therefore I am.” Worth a try!
I've spent way too much time on this....
The lock looks similar to some old Hallmark versions.
I couldn't find a default code but I did find someone who had a similar problem and cracked it with:
turn clockwise to M
turn anticlockwise to Y
turn clockwise to A
If you have a little patience: you could try every letter on the the final turn (aka not just A).
I'm guessing you might want to turn it a few times before trying M.
Of course, if you set your own combination, all bets might be off...
